Would this have helped me when I was sitting at my kitchen table?

In 2008 I was married with three kids, living on the water, and life was good. Then the GFC hit, and we pretty much lost the lot. We went from week to week just getting by, and the marriage ended in 2014. I found myself without a home and without a way to make money.

I'd always done the books for our business, and I'd worked with figures since leaving school in 1987 and falling into a job at a local Chartered Accountants. But none of that changed the reality of being 42, with no job, no money, and pretty much homeless with three kids. I had to learn, grind, and figure it out — working multiple jobs at once just to get a roof back over our heads. Then came a long stretch of making it week to week.

Through all of it, I held onto a vision: a business that wasn't just me trading hours for someone else's hourly rate. Then I met Jade, and together we started JMR Promo — uniforms, signage, flags and banners for local businesses. We don't buy stock until it's sold, and we give small businesses the same service and pricing the big companies get. Helping someone look professional so their business can grow — and ours grows with it. Along the way, I completed my bookkeeping qualifications and became a registered BAS Agent.

Through the women's support groups I'm part of, I see the same moment over and over — a marriage ends, and someone is suddenly overwhelmed, with no idea how to put one foot in front of the other. That's exactly where I was. If I can use what I know to ease that financial crush, even a little, that's why this app exists: to show you your numbers, what you need to cover the bills, how to save on groceries, how to save time, and how to budget for what's coming. Once you know what you need, you have power.

From there, I want to help you build a side hustle — even if it starts small, like Uber Eats or online surveys — with real, trustworthy ways to earn a bit extra. If you've already got a skill, say cleaning, I want to show you how to turn it into a business: how to market it, how to get insured, and how to put money aside for tax. I want to watch women get past this moment of overwhelm, and come out the other side.

This is a general starting point, not legal or financial advice — everyone's situation is different, so take what's useful and leave the rest.

Something to get you through

Some free podcasts and YouTube channels that others have found steadying when things feel like a lot. They're independent — we're not paid to list them, we just find them helpful. Take what fits, leave the rest.

If things feel like too much right now, you don't have to sit with it alone. In Australia, Lifeline is there any time on 13 11 14, and Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.

These are the views of their creators, not ours, and aren't a substitute for professional support. Links open outside the app.
